What the work consists of

Setting up and patching audio equipment — microphones, consoles, PA systems, outboard gear

Sound Engineers operate at the intersection of technology and creativity. Whether running a 48-channel live mix at a festival, recording an orchestra, or cleaning up a film dialogue track, the job is to make sound serve its purpose. Every environment is different. Every signal chain is a puzzle. The work demands fast thinking, trained ears, and technical precision under pressure.

  • Setting up and patching audio equipment — microphones, consoles, PA systems, outboard gear
  • Balancing and mixing multiple audio sources in real time during live events or recording sessions
  • Applying EQ, compression, reverb, and effects to shape the sound to brief
  • Diagnosing and resolving signal chain faults under time pressure
  • Collaborating with artists, directors, producers, and venue staff on technical requirements
  • Striking equipment, coiling cables, and completing post-show technical documentation

Zero signal failures during live events, audience intelligibility and balance, client and artist satisfaction, efficient setup/breakdown times, accurate technical riders.

Immediate — artist and audience response is real-time. Formal feedback via client debrief post-event. This is a role where you find out for certain whether you were right.

The myth"A good live mix replicates the studio sound at the venue."
The reality"A live mix cannot replicate a studio recording — and shouldn't try. Every venue is a different acoustic instrument. A skilled live engineer builds an entirely new mix from scratch for each room, fighting reflections, feedback risk, and PA limitations that simply don't exist in a studio."

  • Runner → assistant sound → full engineer
