Why MySkillGap exists.

Career uncertainty is not a result of indecision. It is a result of insufficient early exposure to real work, the skills it requires, and the problems it solves.

The Problem

A continuum of uncertainty — not a moment of indecision.

Research consistently shows that children are largely unaware of the breadth of job roles that exist. Older students are more aware, but remain uncertain about which roles suit them, how their skills translate, and what work actually involves day to day.

This uncertainty does not resolve with age — it compounds. Early lack of exposure turns into later doubt, second-guessing, and misalignment between skills, interests, and pathways. Existing education systems prioritise standardised attainment over early skill awareness, leaving many talents unseen until formal choices are already made.

Research Finding

What young people aspire to. What the market needs.

A survey of 233,000 young people by the Careers and Enterprise Company reveals a consistent pattern: career aspirations cluster tightly around a small set of visible, prestigious roles — while the roles the labour market most urgently needs remain almost entirely invisible. The gap is not a motivation problem. It is an exposure problem.

No personality typing

Skills are defined as observable actions, not traits. "Coordinates multiple tasks under time pressure" rather than "organised".

No ranking or prestige

Jobs are not weighted by salary, status, or social desirability. A Railway Signaller and a Surgeon are presented with equal rigour.

Bidirectional exploration

Users navigate from skills to jobs and from jobs to skills — revealing connections traditional career tools obscure.

Invisible work made visible

Roles that are essential, skill-rich, and impactful but overlooked in careers education are given equal prominence.

Education-first
