In aviation, VHF radio (118–136.975 MHz) is the primary voice communication medium between air traffic controllers and pilots, supplemented by HF (for oceanic operations) and ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System) for data link messages. In maritime, VHF Channel 16 (156.8 MHz) is the international distress and calling frequency, with DSC (Digital Selective Calling) providing automated distress alerting. UHF and TETRA digital radio systems are used by police, fire, and ambulance (Airwave/ESN in the UK). GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway) is the UK rail communication standard. For air traffic controllers, VHF radio is the primary tool of the job — every clearance, instruction, and readback is transmitted and received over licensed frequencies. The technical quality of communication — phraseology, readback discipline, frequency management — is a safety-critical competency. In maritime operations, a Port Operations Manager or Officer of the Watch maintains a continuous VHF radio watch on Channel 16 and communicates with vessels approaching or departing the port. GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) certification is required for any person who operates shipboard radio equipment on a SOLAS-convention vessel. For all roles, the skill is not operating the hardware — it is the disciplined use of standardised phraseology, authentication procedures, and distress protocols.

Pro Tip
Always listen before you transmit. Stepping on another transmission creates an unintelligible squeal for everyone on the frequency — in ATC, that can block a safety-critical message. If in doubt whether the frequency is clear, wait one extra second.
