Microsoft Excel is the most widely used professional software tool in the world — present in virtually every white-collar role from entry-level administration to senior finance. At the basic level it is a structured grid for organising data, building simple calculations, and producing charts. At the intermediate level it becomes a data analysis tool: pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, conditional formatting, and named ranges. At the advanced level it is a financial modelling and automation environment: multi-sheet DCF models, Monte Carlo simulations, Power Query for ETL, Power Pivot for large dataset aggregation, and VBA macros for repetitive task automation. The depth of Excel skill required varies enormously by role. A construction project manager uses it to track costs against budget. An investment banker uses it to build a three-statement financial model with circular references and sensitivity tables. An HR business partner uses Power Query to join headcount data from HRIS exports to calculate attrition by department. The tool is the same; the depth of use is entirely different.
