Occupational Dossier
Financial Analyst
Finance / Investment / Corporate · "Without Financial Analysts, billion-pound investment decisions would be made on gut instinct — and most would be catastrophically wrong."
Capital allocation decisions require rigorous analysis of financial performance, risk, and future value. Financial Analysts build the models, assess the numbers, and translate financial complexity into recommendations that drive investment, acquisition, and strategic decisions.

One measurement tool carries the trade — the judgement reading it stays human.
The measurement layer of this role runs through Microsoft Excel — The universal spreadsheet tool used across every sector for data analysis, financial modelling, and reporting.
Doing it well
Model accuracy and robustness, forecast vs. actual variance, quality of investment recommendations, deal outcomes, and speed of financial deliverables under deadline.
Weekly via manager review of model outputs. Formal mid-year and annual performance reviews. This is a role where you find out for certain whether you were right.
Myth & reality
Why it matters
A flawed financial model can mislead a board into a bad acquisition, misallocate millions in capital, or produce a forecast that drives wrong strategic decisions — consequences that compound for years.
Hours of data cleansing before modelling begins, managing version control across complex linked spreadsheets, translating between finance team language and executive expectations, and absorbing the stress of tight deal deadlines.
