Truth

Excel remains the most widely used analytical and business productivity tool in the world, with over 1.1 billion users globally as of 2023. While Python and Power BI are powerful complements for specific use cases, Excel's dominance in finance, operations, HR, and general business analysis is not diminishing. Most organisations run critical processes in Excel that will not be migrated to other platforms for years. Excel expertise is the most consistently requested analytical skill in non-technical job descriptions. Advanced Excel proficiency — particularly Power Query, Power Pivot, and dynamic arrays — represents a significant productivity advantage that Python cannot easily replicate for non-developers working with structured business data.

Research & Outlook

Excel is being significantly enhanced by Microsoft's investment in the 365 platform — dynamic arrays, XLOOKUP, Lambda functions, and Python in Excel (in preview) are expanding its analytical capability. The integration of Copilot AI into Excel is beginning to automate formula writing, data analysis suggestions, and natural language querying. Power Query and Power Pivot are becoming standard tools for business users as data volumes grow.
