What it is

About LinkedIn Recruiter

LinkedIn Recruiter is LinkedIn's dedicated talent acquisition tool, designed for in-house HR teams and recruitment agencies who source candidates at scale. Where a personal LinkedIn account provides basic search and twenty InMail credits per month, Recruiter provides Boolean search across LinkedIn's full member database (1 billion+ profiles), unlimited InMail credits within fair-use limits, project pipelines to track candidates through stages, team collaboration tools for sharing candidates with hiring managers, and SpotLight filters (Open to Work, past applicants, people who follow your company page) that prioritise warm candidates before cold outreach begins. The extended candidate profile view shows contact information that candidates have made visible, skills endorsements, and — uniquely to Recruiter — whether a candidate has been previously messaged by another user at your organisation. For an HR Business Partner managing end-to-end recruitment, LinkedIn Recruiter is the primary sourcing channel for professional and specialist roles where job boards produce limited response. The platform's InMail response rates (averaging 10–25% for well-crafted messages) are higher than cold email for professionals who actively maintain their LinkedIn profiles. The Recruiter Lite tier is adequate for an HR Business Partner running five to ten roles per year from a single seat; the full Recruiter product is designed for in-house talent teams running dozens of concurrent searches with multiple collaborators. A well-run Recruiter pipeline — with stages mapped to the hiring process, clear candidate notes, and sharing set up so hiring managers can review profiles asynchronously — eliminates the spreadsheet tracking that wastes hours in most HR workflows.

What you can do with it

Capabilities

1

Build a Boolean search string in LinkedIn Recruiter for a niche technical role — combining terms like (("data engineer" OR "analytics engineer") AND ("dbt" OR "Spark") AND ("Python")) with geography and seniority filters to surface a targeted list of candidates who match the hiring manager's exact technical requirements before InMail outreach begins

2

Create a Recruiter project pipeline for an active search — adding stages (Shortlisted, InMail Sent, Responded, Phone Screen Booked, Interview, Offer) and moving candidates through as the process progresses, then sharing the pipeline with the hiring manager so they can review profiles and leave comments without needing Recruiter access themselves

3

Use SpotLight filters to prioritise warm candidates before cold outreach — filtering a search results page to show first the candidates who follow your company page or who are past applicants, then those marked Open to Work, then the full pool — systematically working down in order of expected response rate

4

Analyse InMail performance in Recruiter's analytics dashboard — reviewing the acceptance rate and response rate for InMails sent over the last 90 days, identifying whether the message template used for senior candidates is performing differently to the one used for junior candidates, and A/B testing a subject-line change on the next batch

5

Export a list of candidates from a Recruiter project to share with the hiring manager for an async review — selecting the relevant fields (name, current role, current company, seniority, location, profile URL) and exporting to a PDF for a hiring manager who wants to review the shortlist in a board meeting without logging into LinkedIn

How to learn it

Learning Resources

LinkedIn Learning (linked to Recruiter subscription) — free for Recruiter subscribers; courses on LinkedIn Recruiter navigation, Boolean search construction, and InMail writing; the "LinkedIn Recruiter Essentials" course takes about two hours and covers the core workflow

LinkedIn Talent Blog (business.linkedin.com/talent-solutions/blog) — free; LinkedIn's own practitioner publication covering sourcing strategy, InMail best practices, and hiring trends with data from LinkedIn's own member and job market analysis

Boolean Black Belt (booleanblackbelt.com) — free; Glen Cathey's long-running blog on Boolean search methodology; the most rigorous public resource for building effective search strings across LinkedIn and other databases

Recruiting Brainfood newsletter (recruitingbrainfood.com) — free weekly newsletter covering sourcing strategy, recruiting technology, and labour market trends; useful for developing a practice beyond tool features to the strategy behind candidate sourcing

Pro Tip

InMail response rates are primarily determined by relevance, not length. A message that demonstrates you have read the candidate's profile — referencing a specific project they led or a career transition that matches the role — consistently outperforms a generic template even at three times the word count. The single most effective InMail structure is: one sentence showing you have done your homework, one sentence on why the role specifically connects to their background, and one concrete question rather than an open-ended "would you be interested?". Specific questions get specific answers; open questions get silence.
