Stakeholder Communication

Communication / Professional

"The observable action of keeping relevant parties informed, aligned, and engaged — adapting the message, medium, and frequency to the needs of each audience."

YOUR SKILLS

Problems This Skill Solves

  • A project derails because a key stakeholder felt blindsided by a decision they should have been consulted on.
  • A team does excellent work that gets cut because the value was never communicated to the people who control budgets.
  • Conflicting requirements from different stakeholders cause a project to stall with no agreed direction.
  • A change programme fails because the people affected by it were informed rather than engaged.
Myths vs Truths
Myth

"More communication is always better"

Truth

Over-communicating creates noise and disengagement — the skill is sending the right information to the right person at the right frequency.

Myth

"Effective stakeholder communication means giving stakeholders the information they need — regular updates prevent surprises."

Truth

Regular updates prevent information surprises but do not prevent expectation misalignment, which is the more common failure mode. Stakeholders form expectations from signals beyond formal updates — hallway conversations, visible progress, team behaviour, and industry norms. Managing expectations means actively shaping those signals, not just ensuring the formal update cadence is maintained.

Research & Outlook

As work becomes more cross-functional and distributed, stakeholder communication is the lubricant that prevents friction. It is a learnable craft, not a personality trait.
