What it is

About Hotjar

Hotjar is a behaviour-analytics and feedback tool that shows how visitors actually use a website through heatmaps, session recordings and on-site surveys. It generates heatmaps of clicks, scrolls and mouse movement, records anonymised individual user sessions and runs on-site surveys/feedback widgets, giving UX researchers and marketers qualitative insight that traditional analytics (like GA4) can't show.

What you can do with it

Capabilities

1

Generate click, scroll and move heatmaps for any page

2

Record and replay individual (anonymised) user sessions

3

Run on-site surveys and feedback polls targeted to specific pages or segments

4

Set up funnels to see where users drop off in a flow

5

Combine qualitative recordings with quantitative analytics to diagnose UX issues

How to learn it

Learning Resources

Hotjar's own Academy (free courses on UX research and Hotjar tool use)

Hotjar's help documentation and blog case studies

General CRO (conversion rate optimisation) courses that reference heatmap analysis

Practise by installing the free tier on a personal or test website and reviewing real recordings

Pro Tip

Microsoft Clarity offers unlimited free heatmaps and recordings, so many teams run it alongside or instead of Hotjar's paid tiers purely for volume — Hotjar's edge is its more polished survey/feedback tooling
