Skill Profile

Wireframing

Design / UX

"Creating low-fidelity structural layouts of interfaces — defining information hierarchy, navigation, and interaction patterns before visual design is applied."

YOUR SKILLS

Problems This Skill Solves

  • Stakeholders debate visual design details when the information architecture is still unresolved — wireframes focus discussion on structure before aesthetics
  • An expensive development sprint builds a feature that users find confusing — wireframe testing identifies the problem before a line of code is written
  • A developer interprets a brief differently from the designer — wireframes provide a shared reference that prevents misalignment
Myths vs Truths
Myth

"Wireframes need to be detailed to be useful."

Truth

Low-fidelity wireframes are often more effective for early-stage feedback — stakeholders critique structure rather than getting distracted by visual design details that aren't yet finalised.

Myth

"Wireframes are mainly for communicating structure to stakeholders — once the stakeholder has approved the layout, the wireframe has served its purpose."

Truth

Stakeholder approval of a wireframe confirms that the layout makes sense to someone who already knows the product vision. The primary value of wireframing is forcing the designer to resolve interaction and navigation decisions before investing in visual design — approvals given on wireframes that do not resolve these decisions create rework when the unresolved questions surface during visual design or development.

Research & Outlook

AI design tools are accelerating wireframing but UX thinking and user advocacy remain human.

Growth Path

Beginner

Can produce basic wireframes of simple interfaces that define content placement and primary navigation.

Intermediate

Wireframes complex multi-step flows, annotates interaction behaviour, creates clickable prototypes, and facilitates design reviews using wireframes as the discussion artefact.

Expert

Designs system-level information architecture through wireframing, creates wireframe design systems, and uses wireframes to align multi-disciplinary teams on product direction before high-fidelity design begins.

How to Practise

  • 1.Wireframe the same user flow (e.g. checkout) in three different ways to practise exploring structural alternatives
  • 2.Critique wireframes of existing apps — draw out the information hierarchy they imply and assess whether it serves user goals
  • 3.Complete a design challenge (e.g. Daily UI) by wireframing before adding any visual design treatment

How to Prove

  • ·A UX portfolio with wireframes showing design evolution from low-fidelity through to tested prototype
  • ·Case studies demonstrating how wireframe testing changed a design before development investment was made
  • ·Figma or Sketch files shared in a portfolio demonstrating wireframing process and iteration
