Myth

"Information architecture is mainly about taxonomy — organise the content into a clear category structure, and users will find what they need."

Truth

Taxonomy reflects how the organisation thinks about its content, not necessarily how users think about their needs. The primary IA challenge is understanding the user's mental model — what they are trying to do, what vocabulary they use, and what they expect to find where — and designing the structure to match that model rather than the content owner's classification logic.

Research & Outlook

Information architecture is evolving as AI-powered search and conversational interfaces challenge the primacy of hierarchical navigation — if a user can ask a question in natural language and receive a direct answer, the importance of browse-able taxonomies diminishes. However, the quality of AI search outputs depends critically on the quality of the underlying content structure and metadata — poorly structured, unlabelled content produces poor AI retrieval results, meaning IA skill is increasingly about designing for machine readability as well as human navigation. The explosion of content in enterprise environments (SharePoint, Confluence, Notion, Slack) is creating urgent demand for IA practitioners who can bring order to content chaos at scale. The discipline is also expanding into non-screen contexts: voice interfaces, chatbots, and AR/VR environments all require IA thinking applied to novel interaction paradigms.

How to Practise

  • 1.Conduct a content audit of any website you use regularly — inventory every page, classify it by type and topic, and draw a site map. Identify where the current structure breaks down and propose a restructured taxonomy.
  • 2.Run a card sorting exercise with 5–10 participants using physical index cards or Optimal Workshop — ask them to group a set of content items into categories that make sense to them, then analyse the results to identify a consensus structure.
  • 3.Practise tree testing: create a navigation structure for a simple website, give participants tasks to find specific content, and observe where they go wrong. Use the failure points to iterate the structure.
  • 4.Study the IA of well-designed large-scale sites (GOV.UK, NHS.uk, BBC) — analyse how their taxonomies, navigation labels, and content relationships are constructed and documented.
