Microinteractions are one scale of interaction design. The broader discipline covers how users navigate between states, what feedback the system provides when actions succeed or fail, how errors are recovered from, how affordances communicate what interactions are possible, and how the temporal flow of a task is structured. Animation is the implementation of interaction decisions, not the decisions themselves.
Research & Outlook
Interaction design is being expanded by the emergence of AI-native interfaces — where the primary interaction modality is natural language rather than clicking — requiring interaction designers to think about conversation flow, prompt design, clarification dialogues, and uncertainty communication as core IxD challenges. The proliferation of spatial computing (Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest) is creating demand for interaction designers who can work beyond flat screens, designing gesture-based, gaze-based, and voice-based interactions in three-dimensional environments. Simultaneously, the maturation of design systems at scale (Google Material, Apple HIG, Carbon, Ant Design) is automating the specification of standard interaction patterns, shifting interaction designers' value towards novel, complex, and edge-case interaction problems rather than standard component behaviour. The boundary between interaction design and front-end engineering is blurring as tools like Framer and Webflow allow designers to implement interactions directly in production-ready code.

Designs complex interaction flows for multi-step tasks, data-heavy interfaces, and cross-platform products. Creates high-fidelity prototypes in ProtoPie or Principle. Defines interaction specifications including transition types, timing, and easing. Conducts usability testing on interaction designs and iterates based on observed failure patterns. Contributes interaction patterns to a design system.
Defines the interaction design language for entire products or platforms — establishing motion principles, transition systems, and behavioural consistency standards across teams. Designs novel interaction patterns for emerging contexts (voice, AR/VR, haptics, gesture). Leads cross-functional alignment on interaction standards between design, engineering, and product. Researches and applies cognitive psychology and embodied cognition research to interaction problems.
How to Practise
- 1.Practise redesigning interactions you find frustrating in apps you use daily — identify what the current interaction gets wrong (unclear affordance, missing feedback, inconsistent behaviour), sketch an alternative, and prototype it in Figma.
- 2.Study the interaction design principles in Google's Material Design, Apple's Human Interface Guidelines, and Microsoft's Fluent Design System — understand not just the patterns but the reasoning behind each interaction decision.
- 3.Take a form or multi-step wizard in any product and redesign the error states, validation feedback, loading states, and empty states — these "edge case" interactions are where most IxD skill is demonstrated.
- 4.Build a small interactive prototype in ProtoPie or Principle that uses conditional logic, variables, and component states — practise designing interactions that respond differently based on user context or prior actions.
