Spatial coverage addresses where samples are taken, not whether they will answer the question. Sample design also requires selecting appropriate sampling media, deciding between targeted and random approaches based on the investigation objective, ensuring sample size is sufficient for the statistical analysis planned, and maintaining chain of custody that makes the data defensible. Good spatial coverage with wrong methodology or inadequate QA produces systematically biased data.
Research & Outlook
Environmental sampling is being transformed by remote and automated technologies — environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling for ecological surveys, autonomous water quality monitoring buoys, drone-deployed sensor arrays, and passive sampling devices that accumulate contaminants over weeks are reducing the cost and increasing the spatial resolution of field data. Regulatory frameworks are adapting: the Environment Agency and Natural England are increasingly accepting eDNA evidence for protected species surveys. However, the interpretation of complex, multi-source field datasets still requires expert human judgement, and the legal defensibility of sampling methodology remains a core professional skill that cannot be automated.

Can execute a defined sampling protocol under supervision — collecting soil, water, or biological samples following a method statement, completing chain of custody forms, and preserving samples correctly. Familiar with health and safety requirements for fieldwork, including COSHH assessments and lone working procedures.
Designs sampling strategies for routine site investigations: selects sample types, determines sample numbers and locations based on the conceptual site model, specifies analysis methods, and manages field teams. Interprets field data in real time to adapt the sampling programme as new information emerges. Writes field reports and sampling methodology sections of technical reports.
Designs complex, multi-phase sampling programmes for high-risk or legally contentious sites — including phased investigations, groundwater monitoring networks, and ecological baseline surveys. Acts as expert witness on sampling methodology in planning inquiries or litigation. Reviews and approves sampling strategies for junior staff and sub-contractors. Contributes to development of industry sampling guidance.
How to Practise
- 1.Complete the SiLC (Specialist in Land Condition) or CEnv pathway through the Geological Society, which includes assessed field sampling competence — or shadow an experienced contaminated land consultant on a site investigation.
- 2.Work through the Environment Agency's Land Contamination Risk Management (LCRM) guidance — understand how sampling design (number of samples, grid vs judgement-based approaches) connects to conceptual site model development.
- 3.Practise designing a sampling strategy for a hypothetical brownfield site: define your sampling objectives, select appropriate sample types (soil, groundwater, soil gas), determine grid spacing, and specify analysis methods.
- 4.Get hands-on with field equipment — auger sampling, water pump installation, and field measurement instruments are skills that must be practised physically. Volunteer for fieldwork on university projects, ecological surveys, or environmental consultancy placements.
How to Prove
- ·Site investigation report (Phase 2 ESA) that you authored or contributed to, where sampling design and methodology are explicitly documented and the report has been accepted by a regulatory body or planning authority
- ·Field logbooks or chain of custody records demonstrating consistent and auditable sampling practice across multiple sites
- ·SiLC registration or CGeol/CEcol chartership that includes assessed field sampling competence
- ·Ecological survey licence (e.g. Natural England great crested newt eDNA licence) requiring demonstrated competence in field sample collection protocols
