Myth

"Any ecologist can survey any species — ecology is a general qualification."

Truth

Ecological survey methodology is highly species-group specific, and surveys for legally protected species often require a specific survey licence — which is only granted to practitioners who can demonstrate adequate field skills for that species group. A competent bat ecologist may have limited skills in botanical NVC survey, and vice versa. Appointing a generalist ecologist to lead a specialist survey without checking their species-specific competency is a common cause of inadequate surveys that fail scrutiny at planning stage.

Research & Outlook

Ecological survey demand is growing significantly, driven by mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain requirements in England (under the Environment Act 2021), increasing environmental permitting complexity, and infrastructure investment in transport and energy. eDNA techniques, acoustic monitoring technology, and remote sensing are expanding survey capability and reducing cost for some species groups, but field-based habitat and vegetation surveys remain irreplaceable. The profession faces a skills shortage, making experienced field ecologists with licensed species competencies increasingly valuable.

Growth Path

Beginner

Can conduct a Phase 1 Habitat Survey independently using JNCC methodology and produce a basic habitat map with target notes. Identifies common habitat types and widespread species. Understands the legal framework for protected species surveys and when specialist surveys are triggered.

Intermediate

Designs and leads surveys for multiple species groups (bats, reptiles, birds, vegetation) applying the correct seasonal windows, survey effort standards, and recording protocols for each. Interprets survey results in the context of local and national species data. Produces EIA-quality survey reports. Holds or is working towards protected species survey licences.

Expert

Leads complex multi-season baseline survey programmes for major infrastructure projects or Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) management plans. Designs bespoke survey methodologies for rare or poorly-studied species. Provides peer review of survey reports. Advises on survey programme design for Biodiversity Net Gain assessments and ecological masterplanning.

How to Practise

  • 1.Complete a Phase 1 Habitat Survey of a local site using the JNCC handbook methodology, producing a map and target note record for submission to a local records centre.
  • 2.Accompany an experienced ecologist on a protected species survey — bat transect, great crested newt survey, or dormouse check — to learn field protocols before leading independently.
  • 3.Learn to identify the key indicator species for your target habitats (e.g. ancient woodland indicators, upland heath species, wetland plants) using field guides and the BSBI online learning resources.
  • 4.Practise survey design by calculating the appropriate sample size, survey timing window, and method selection for a hypothetical site assessment brief.

How to Prove

  • ·CIEEM membership with demonstrated field survey competency record, including species for which the ecologist is licensed (e.g. bat survey licence, great crested newt Class Survey Licence)
  • ·Authored or co-authored ecological survey reports submitted as supporting documents to planning applications, with methodology sections demonstrating standards compliance
  • ·Natural England or NatureScot protected species survey licence — requires demonstrated competency and is a legal prerequisite for handling protected species
  • ·Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) habitat assessments completed using the Biodiversity Metric 4.0 methodology, which requires standardised habitat condition assessment underpinned by field survey
