Data is a record of what was measured, how it was collected, and who decided to capture it. Every dataset has limitations — sampling bias, measurement error, missing data, and definitional choices that shape what appears and what does not. Interpreting data responsibly requires understanding its provenance and limitations as much as reading the numbers themselves. The most dangerous data interpretations are confident ones that ignore what the data cannot tell you.

Data interpretation is one of the most universally valuable skills in the modern economy — applicable across virtually every sector and function. As organisations generate more data and AI tools make it easier to surface patterns and generate summaries, the critical skill is shifting from "can read data" to "can judge whether a data-derived conclusion is valid and worth acting on." Can read charts, graphs, and summary tables accurately. Understands basic statistics (averages, percentages, trends) and can describe what data shows in plain language. Aware of common data interpretation errors (correlation vs causation, misleading visualisations) and can flag them when reviewing others' work.
Interprets complex, multi-source datasets — identifies patterns, anomalies, and trends, contextualises findings against benchmarks or historical data, and produces clear written or visual summaries for non-technical audiences. Uses statistical tools to test whether observed differences are meaningful or within expected variation.
Leads data interpretation for complex, high-stakes decisions — designs the analytical framework for a question, selects appropriate statistical methods, identifies and corrects for data quality issues, and communicates nuanced findings with appropriate uncertainty to executive or policy audiences. Coaches others in analytical rigour and defensible interpretation.
How to Practise
- 1.Take a publicly available dataset (e.g. from data.gov.uk or Kaggle) and write a one-page interpretation: what does the data show, what does it not show, and what decision would you recommend based on it?
- 2.Practise identifying common data interpretation errors in published reports — misleading axes, cherry-picked time windows, correlation presented as causation, unrepresentative samples.
- 3.Learn to calculate and interpret key statistics without a calculator: mean, median, standard deviation, percentage change, and confidence interval — these are the building blocks of almost every data interpretation task.
- 4.Write an interpretation of a dashboard or report you use at work or in your personal life, as if briefing a senior leader who has not seen the data before.
