Energy models predict theoretical performance based on assumptions. Operational performance depends on occupant behaviour, commissioning quality, and system controls — often diverging significantly from model predictions.

Compliance modelling uses standardised assumptions that often diverge significantly from how the building will actually operate. Operational energy is routinely 2–3 times higher than compliance model predictions because real occupancy, controls, and equipment usage differ from the standardised inputs. Post-occupancy performance requires energy modelling that reflects actual conditions, not the compliance case.
