Skill Profile
Copywriting
"The observable action of writing persuasive, audience-specific text for marketing and commercial purposes in order to prompt a defined reader response — a click, a purchase, a sign-up, or a belief."
YOUR SKILLS
Problems This Skill Solves
- Marketing materials that fail to communicate why the audience should care, resulting in low engagement and conversion
- Brand voice inconsistency across channels because no defined tone or messaging framework exists
- Product or service benefits described from the company's perspective rather than the customer's — missing what motivates the buyer
- High-traffic pages or ads that generate clicks but fail to convert because the copy does not address objections or build sufficient trust

"Good copywriting is about clever, creative writing."
The most effective copywriting is often plain, direct, and deliberately unremarkable in style. The goal is clarity and persuasion — not literary admiration. Copywriters who prioritise wit over relevance, or style over substance, routinely underperform writers who deeply understand their audience's motivations and speak directly to them. David Ogilvy's most famous ads read like letters, not literature.
Research & Outlook
AI writing tools (ChatGPT, Jasper, Copy.ai) are commoditising first-draft copy production, which is accelerating the shift in value towards strategic copywriting — the ability to define what to say, to whom, and why, rather than just how to say it. Copywriters who combine strong strategic thinking, audience psychology, and the ability to direct and edit AI-assisted drafts will remain in demand. Brand voice, tone, and long-form persuasion at scale are areas where human judgement continues to outperform automated tools.

How to Practise
- 1.Rewrite a poorly converting landing page headline and sub-headline using a defined copywriting framework (PAS: Problem–Agitate–Solution, or AIDA: Attention–Interest–Desire–Action) — test whether it improves clarity and relevance.
- 2.Write three different versions of the same email subject line targeting three different emotional triggers (curiosity, urgency, self-interest) and compare open rate hypotheses.
- 3.Analyse five pieces of copy you find genuinely compelling — ads, landing pages, email subject lines — and reverse-engineer what technique each is using.
- 4.Choose a product you use and write a complete sales page for it from scratch: headline, subheading, body copy, objection handling, and call to action.
How to Prove
- ·Portfolio of copy across multiple formats (landing pages, email sequences, ad copy, product descriptions, social ads) with associated performance data where available
- ·Evidence of copy that measurably improved a conversion metric — email open rate, click-through rate, landing page conversion rate
- ·CopyHackers, AWAI, or equivalent copywriting course completion demonstrating structured knowledge of persuasion frameworks
- ·Client or employer testimonials referencing specific outcomes delivered by your copy
