YOUR SKILLS
Problems This Skill Solves

"More content is always better."
Volume without strategy is noise. Producing more content than your team can do well dilutes quality, splits audience attention, and creates a maintenance burden as old content ages poorly. The most effective content marketing programmes are often highly focused: fewer pieces, more depth, better distribution. A single definitive piece of content on a topic can outperform 20 thin posts on the same subject.
Research & Outlook
Content marketing is undergoing a structural shift driven by AI content generation tools, which are lowering the cost of basic content production to near-zero and causing search engines to recalibrate towards quality, experience-based, and genuinely expert content. The skill premium is moving from "can produce content" to "can produce content that demonstrates real expertise, builds trust, and serves the audience in ways AI cannot replicate." Content strategists with deep subject matter knowledge and strong editorial judgement will be increasingly valuable.

Growth Path
Creates individual content pieces (blog posts, social posts, email newsletters) based on a brief or content calendar. Understands the difference between content for awareness, consideration, and conversion. Familiar with basic SEO principles (keyword targeting, meta descriptions) and can use a CMS to publish content independently.
Develops and executes a content strategy — defines content pillars, builds an editorial calendar, manages content production across formats and contributors, and tracks performance against defined KPIs. Optimises existing content based on analytics data and manages distribution across owned and earned channels.
Leads content marketing at a programme level — defining brand voice, owning the content strategy, managing a team of writers, designers, and videographers, and integrating content with SEO, demand generation, and product marketing. Makes investment decisions across content formats, builds audience segments, and owns organic acquisition metrics at a business level.
How to Practise
- 1.Start a personal blog, newsletter, or YouTube channel on a topic you know well — treat it as a real content strategy exercise (define audience, choose a format, publish consistently).
- 2.Do keyword research for a real or hypothetical business using a free tool (Google Search Console or Ubersuggest) and map content ideas to search intent.
- 3.Take an existing piece of content and repurpose it across three formats — a blog post into an email newsletter, a LinkedIn carousel, and a short video script.
- 4.Study a brand whose content marketing you admire: reverse-engineer their content strategy — what topics do they own, how do they distribute, how does content map to their funnel?
How to Prove
- ·Portfolio of content pieces across different formats and channels with associated performance data (traffic, engagement, conversion)
- ·Evidence of organic traffic growth, email list growth, or lead generation attributable to a content programme you led
- ·HubSpot Content Marketing Certification or equivalent (free, widely recognised baseline credential)
- ·A documented content strategy: audience definition, content pillars, channel selection, and measurement framework
