What the work consists of

Managing vehicle procurement, disposal, and whole-life costs

Fleet Managers are responsible for the lifecycle management of vehicle fleets. They oversee procurement and disposal of vehicles, maintenance scheduling, driver risk management, fuel efficiency, regulatory compliance (DVSA, O-licence), and fleet cost control.

  • Managing vehicle procurement, disposal, and whole-life costs
  • Monitoring fleet compliance with DVSA regulations
  • Overseeing maintenance schedules and breakdown response
  • Analysing telematics data to improve driver behaviour and fuel efficiency
  • Managing driver licence and road risk programmes

Key benefits: operational leadership role; strong demand across sectors; clear progression to head of transport; data-driven modern tools.

The tool in hand

One measurement tool carries the trade — the judgement reading it stays human.

The measurement layer of this role runs through Jaama / Chevin Fleet Solutions — Comprehensive fleet management platforms for vehicle lifecycle, compliance, and driver management.

Doing it well

Fleet availability %, cost per mile, compliance audit results, accident rates.

Monthly fleet KPI reporting. This is a role where you find out for certain whether you were right.

Myth & reality

The myth"Fleet managers primarily focus on minimising vehicle downtime and maximising operational availability."
The reality"Downtime is one metric in a system of competing priorities. Fleet managers make simultaneous decisions about total cost of ownership, legal compliance, driver risk, fuel and energy strategy, and commercial contract management. A fleet optimised purely for availability often carries excessive maintenance cost or holds assets beyond their economical life. The skill is identifying cost tradeoffs across the full lifecycle."

Why it matters

If this role stops for four hours

Vehicle downtime directly affects delivery SLAs, emergency response times, and operational costs.

The labour you never see

Every delivery that arrives on time, every ambulance that starts — a Fleet Manager ensured the vehicle was ready.

What the sector data means here: Automation is reducing some operational roles, but complex infrastructure management remains skill-short and structurally critical.
