Predictor-LIMA

Maps how noise from a road, railway or factory actually spreads across a neighbourhood.

What it is

About Predictor-LIMA

Predictor-LIMA is environmental noise prediction software used to model and map noise propagation from sources such as roads, railways, industrial sites and airports across large geographic areas, incorporating terrain, barriers, buildings and meteorological effects. It's used to produce noise contour maps for planning applications, environmental impact assessments and statutory noise mapping (e.g. under the Environmental Noise Directive), calculating exposure using standard methods like CRTN, CRN and CNOSSOS-EU. It competes directly with CadnaA and SoundPLAN in the environmental acoustics consultancy market.

What you can do with it

Capabilities

1

Model noise propagation from road, rail, industrial and aviation sources

2

Produce noise contour maps for planning and environmental impact assessments

3

Calculate noise exposure using standard methods (CRTN, CNOSSOS-EU, ISO 9613)

4

Assess the effect of noise barriers, terrain and buildings on propagation

5

Support statutory noise mapping and action planning requirements

How to learn it

Learning Resources

Institute of Acoustics courses on environmental noise assessment and mapping

Software vendor training (distributor-run courses, depending on current regional supplier)

Practise on sample datasets provided with the software licence

Environmental acoustics consultancy on-the-job training, since most learning happens on live planning projects

Pro Tip

Get your source and terrain data quality right before trusting the output contours — noise mapping software is only as accurate as the traffic flow, terrain and building height data fed into it.
