AutoCAD by Autodesk is the most widely used CAD application across architecture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and construction. It is primarily a 2D drafting tool — producing the technical drawings (floor plans, sections, elevations, site layouts, engineering schematics) that form the legal and contractual documents behind any built project. AutoCAD LT is a 2D-only subset at a lower price; full AutoCAD adds 3D modelling and automation via LISP scripting. Despite the rise of BIM tools like Revit, AutoCAD remains essential for detailed drawing production and remains the lingua franca for exchanging drawings between disciplines.
