What the work consists of

Conducting site investigations and interpreting ground condition and survey data

Civil Engineering is engineering at the largest scale. Projects range from a local drainage system to a major motorway — each requiring structural analysis, project management, site investigation, contractor coordination, and regulatory compliance. The work moves between office and site, between calculation and communication, between long-term design and urgent on-site problem-solving.

  • Conducting site investigations and interpreting ground condition and survey data

The measurement layer of this role runs through Tekla Structures — The structural BIM platform used to create the fabrication-ready 3D models, connection details, and shop drawings that steel fabricators and contractors build from.

Doing it well

Project delivery on time and within budget, structural integrity of completed works, safety record (RIDDOR incidents), client satisfaction, and compliance with regulatory standards.

Project-based — milestone reviews, site inspections, and post-construction sign-off. Continuous on live construction sites via daily site diaries. This is a role where you find out for certain whether you were right.

The hard part is managing constraints: contaminated ground, live traffic, drainage conflicts, utility clashes, planning conditions, and programme pressure — simultaneously. Engineering design happens within a system of competing constraints that no textbook fully prepares you for."
