Skill Profile

Vibration Analysis

Structural / Mechanical

"Measuring and interpreting mechanical vibrations in structures, machinery, and the ground — diagnosing the source, predicting the impact, and specifying solutions to prevent damage or nuisance."

YOUR SKILLS

Skill Breakdown

When a machine runs, a train passes, or a building sways in the wind, it vibrates. These vibrations travel through solid materials far more efficiently than through air, which is why you can feel a passing lorry through the floor before you hear it. Vibration Analysis is the skill of measuring these movements — typically in millimetres per second or decibels of vibration velocity — and interpreting what they mean. It tells you whether a building is at risk of structural damage, whether a machine is about to fail, whether residents will be disturbed, and whether re-radiating noise (the structure 'singing' the vibration back as sound) will be a problem.

Problems This Skill Solves

  • A new underground railway line causing vibration that residents in a building above can feel
  • A factory floor vibrating at a frequency that resonates with a precision instrument, ruining its output
  • A bridge that develops unexpected oscillations under pedestrian loading — the Millennium Bridge problem
  • HVAC plant on a hospital roof transmitting low-frequency vibration into operating theatres below

Myths vs Truths
Myth

"If you can't hear it, it's not a problem"

Truth

Many structurally damaging vibrations and health-affecting exposures are below the threshold of audibility. Low-frequency vibration can cause fatigue, nausea, and sleep disruption without ever registering as sound.

Myth

"Vibration analysis is mainly a condition monitoring tool — its value is in detecting bearing failure before it causes breakdown."

Truth

Bearing failure detection is one application. Vibration analysis also characterises structural resonances, quantifies ground-borne vibration from transport and construction, assesses occupant comfort in buildings, and guides the design of isolation systems. The diagnostic principles are the same across all these applications; the frequency ranges and acceptance criteria differ significantly.

Research & Outlook

The rise of urban rail networks and high-speed rail is driving significant research into ground-borne vibration prediction and control. Smart infrastructure is embedding permanent vibration monitoring sensors into bridges, tunnels, and buildings, creating massive streams of data that require vibration analysis skills to interpret. Advanced metamaterial vibration isolators are emerging as a next-generation alternative to traditional rubber mounts.

Growth Path

Beginner

Understands the difference between vibration and airborne sound, can use a smartphone accelerometer to take a basic reading, and knows the relevant human perception thresholds.

Practitioner

Can set up and operate professional vibration monitoring equipment, process data against BS 6472 and other standards, and write a vibration impact assessment.

Expert

Designs vibration isolation systems for complex sources, conducts modal analysis to find structural resonances, and advises on ground-borne noise from railways and construction for sensitive buildings.

How to Practise

  • 1.Place your hand on an appliance (washing machine, refrigerator) while it runs — feel how different operating speeds produce different vibrations
  • 2.Use a free smartphone accelerometer app to measure vibration levels on a bridge or floor as people walk across
  • 3.Study the resonant frequency concept by making a ruler vibrate at different lengths over a desk edge
  • 4.Analyse a recorded vibration signal in free software and identify the dominant frequency

How to Prove

  • ·Produce a vibration assessment report for a real site including measurement data, limits comparison, and mitigation recommendations
  • ·Complete a vibration measurement and assessment course (BS 6472 / ISO 2631 methodology)
  • ·Demonstrate diagnosis of a machinery fault through vibration spectrum analysis
