Acoustic engineering is a data discipline. Opinions about whether a room sounds good are not enough — decisions need numbers. Audio Measurement is the practice of taking those numbers correctly: positioning a calibrated microphone in the right place, using the right test signal, capturing data with the right settings, and interpreting the results against the right standard. Done well, it provides an objective picture of acoustic reality that drives evidence-based design decisions. Done poorly, the numbers look clean but lead the engineer in exactly the wrong direction. Measurement is how acoustics moves from art to engineering.

Truth

A single well-placed, well-timed measurement by a skilled practitioner is more valuable than 100 poorly positioned readings. Measurement strategy is as important as the measurements themselves.

Low-cost MEMS microphone arrays and distributed acoustic sensing are enabling large-scale, long-term acoustic monitoring that was previously economically impossible.
