Trip generation is the input to the assessment, not the assessment itself. Trip distribution, route assignment, network performance modelling, intersection capacity analysis, and mode share assumptions all determine whether the conclusion is credible. Trip generation models that are accurate but distributed or assigned incorrectly produce assessment outputs that do not reflect actual highway impact.
Research & Outlook
The shift towards electric vehicles is changing the character of transport impacts assessed — with charging infrastructure provision and grid capacity becoming assessment issues alongside parking demand. Autonomous and connected vehicles are beginning to feature in long-term transport modelling for major infrastructure. How to Practise

- 2.Conduct a site accessibility audit for a development proposal — assess walking routes to local facilities, cycling infrastructure, bus stop locations and service frequency, and rail station access, and score the site against PTAL or a local accessibility framework.
- 3.Study a transport assessment for a permitted major development in your area — identify the methodology used for trip generation, the modelling approach for network impacts, and the mitigation measures agreed with the highway authority.
- 4.Complete an introduction to junction modelling using LinSig — understanding the capacity analysis fundamentals allows transport planners to interpret and review modelling outputs produced by specialists.
How to Prove
- ·MRTPI or CIHT (Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation) membership — both include transport assessment as a core competency.
