Tracking variables is level one of situational awareness. Levels two and three — comprehending what those variables mean in combination, and projecting what the situation will look like in the near future — are distinct cognitive skills that require active mental model maintenance, not just sensory attention. Many accidents involve operators who were tracking all the relevant variables but drew the wrong conclusion from them.
