Myths vs Truths
Myth

"Emergency response protocols exist because ad hoc improvisation in a crisis is dangerous — following the protocol is the professional response."

Truth

Protocols are designed for anticipated scenarios. The practitioner skill is recognising when the situation is evolving outside the protocol's assumptions and making effective decisions in that space — which requires understanding why the protocol works, not just what it says. Rigid protocol adherence in a scenario the protocol does not fit can be as dangerous as having no protocol.

Myth

"If you've never faced a real emergency, you're not prepared."

Truth

High-quality simulation and tabletop exercises build genuine competency. The most effective emergency responders combine trained rehearsal with reflective learning from real events.

Research & Outlook

Emergency response skills are inherently human — they become more valuable as automated systems create new failure modes.

Expert

Leads multi-agency emergency response, chairs post-incident reviews, develops emergency plans, and trains others in emergency response competency.

How to Practise

  • 1.Participate in tabletop emergency exercises relevant to your sector
  • 2.Complete NILO, JESIP, or sector-specific emergency response training
  • 3.Review post-incident reports from major incidents in your field to understand what went right and wrong

How to Prove

  • ·Completion of formal emergency response training (JESIP, NILO, ALS/PHTLS)
  • ·Operational experience in a safety-critical role with emergency response responsibilities
  • ·Post-incident review records demonstrating effective activation and execution of emergency procedures
