Static routes are predictable until the network changes — at which point every route that was stable becomes a potential single point of failure. Dynamic protocols provide automatic convergence after failures that would otherwise require manual intervention at every affected device. In anything beyond a small and genuinely static network, the operational overhead of maintaining static routes exceeds the complexity of running a protocol.
"BGP configuration is mainly about setting up peer relationships — once peers are established and routes are advertised, the routing converges."
Peer establishment and route advertisement are the minimum configuration. BGP behaviour in production is controlled by policy — route filtering, path attribute manipulation, local preference, MED, and community strings that determine which paths are preferred and which routes propagate to which peers. Unconfigured BGP converges on technically valid paths that may violate traffic engineering, commercial, or security requirements.
