Skill Profile
Network Architecture
"Designing the high-level structure of network infrastructure — topology, protocols, segmentation, and redundancy — to meet performance, security, and scalability requirements."
YOUR SKILLS
Problems This Skill Solves
- A growing organisation's flat network has no segmentation — architecture introduces zones and controls that improve security and performance
- A data centre migration fails because no network architecture was planned — proper design prevents downtime
- A single WAN link failure brings down all sites — resilient architecture introduces failover paths

Technology / Telecommunications / Enterprise IT
"Network architecture is mainly about redundancy — sufficient redundancy for the required uptime, and the design is sound."
Redundancy prevents single points of failure but does not address convergence time after failover, traffic engineering under load, security zone segmentation, management plane isolation, or the interaction between redundancy mechanisms and routing protocols. A fully redundant network can still have predictable failure scenarios if these interactions are not understood and designed for.
"Cloud networking has replaced on-premise network architecture."
Cloud networking requires its own architecture discipline — VPCs, transit gateways, security groups, and peering require the same rigour as physical network design.
Research & Outlook
SD-WAN and cloud networking are fundamentally reshaping network architecture practice.

Growth Path
Can design a simple network with appropriate segmentation for a small office using standard topology patterns.
Architects multi-site enterprise networks incorporating redundancy, security zones, and appropriate WAN technologies.
Designs carrier-scale or complex cloud-hybrid network architectures, leads technical governance, and advises at board level on network strategy.
How to Practise
- 1.Design a complete enterprise network from scratch (core, distribution, access, WAN, DMZ) in a lab environment
- 2.Study zero-trust architecture principles and design a compliant network for a notional organisation
- 3.Pursue Cisco CCNP/CCIE or AWS Advanced Networking Specialty certification
How to Prove
- ·Cisco CCNP/CCIE or AWS Certified Advanced Networking — Specialty certification
- ·Architecture diagrams from delivered network infrastructure projects
- ·References from network infrastructure projects delivered as the lead architect
