Dependency mapping identifies the critical path under ideal conditions. Scheduling must also account for resource constraints that create critical paths invisible to pure logic network analysis, float consumption strategies, weather allowances, procurement lead times, and how the schedule behaves when individual activities run late. The critical path under resource constraints is frequently different from the unconstrained logic network.

A schedule is only as useful as its maintenance. Unupdated schedules diverge from reality quickly. Weekly updating against actual progress is the minimum for a schedule to be a useful management tool.
