Synchro
Watch your building go up before it goes up
What it is
About Synchro
Synchro (Synchro 4D / Synchro Pro, part of Bentley Systems) merges traditional Gantt-based project scheduling with a linked 3D model, producing time-lapse-style 4D simulations of construction sequencing. Planners and project managers use it to spot clashes, communicate build sequences to stakeholders and validate logistics and site-access plans before work starts on site.
What you can do with it
Capabilities
Link a construction schedule (imported from Primavera P6, Asta Powerproject or MS Project) to a 3D BIM model
Generate 4D simulations showing build sequence and site logistics over time
Identify spatial and temporal clashes between trades before they occur on site
Track and compare planned versus actual progress visually against the model
Communicate sequencing plans to non-technical stakeholders via animated walkthroughs
How to learn it
Learning Resources
Bentley Systems' official Synchro learning resources and Bentley Institute training
Bentley's YouTube channel and Synchro-specific webinars
4D BIM coursework offered by university construction management programmes
Practise importing a sample schedule against a free BIM model to build a basic 4D simulation
Pro Tip
Keep your WBS (work breakdown structure) in the schedule aligned with how the 3D model is broken into objects/elements from the outset — mismatched breakdowns are the number-one reason 4D linking becomes a manual, error-prone slog
