Load Analysis

Technical / Engineering

"Calculating the forces — dead loads, live loads, wind, seismic, and dynamic — that act on a structure and designing elements to safely resist them."

YOUR SKILLS

Problems This Skill Solves

  • A building extension is planned — load analysis determines whether existing foundations can take the additional load
  • A contractor wants to use heavy plant on a suspended floor — temporary works load analysis confirms whether it's safe
  • Wind loads on a tall building cladding system are unknown — analysis establishes the design load for the façade engineer

Myths vs Truths
Myth

"FEA software does all the structural analysis now."

Truth

FEA produces results, but an engineer must set up the model correctly and interpret the output with judgement. Garbage in, garbage out — software doesn't replace understanding.

Myth

"Structural load analysis is mainly about applying the correct safety factors — standard factors of safety cover uncertainty in loads and material properties."

Truth

Safety factors provide statistical robustness for typical loading scenarios. The analytical challenge is identifying loads that fall outside standard assumptions — dynamic loading from plant and machinery, impact loads, progressive collapse scenarios, and changes of use that alter load categories. Standard safety factors do not compensate for failing to identify that a non-standard load condition applies.

Research & Outlook

FEA software has transformed structural analysis but engineering judgement in interpreting results remains essential.

Growth Path

Beginner

Can identify load types, apply load combinations from Eurocode 1, and size simple elements using tables and manual calculation.

Intermediate

Produces full load take-downs for multi-storey structures, designs members in steel, concrete, and timber, and checks temporary works proposals.

Expert

Analyses complex structural systems (long-span, dynamic, seismic), interprets FEA results critically, and takes engineering responsibility for scheme structural designs.

How to Practise

  • 1.Work through Eurocode 1 load combination examples manually before using software
  • 2.Design a simple steel frame structure by hand calculation and verify in analysis software
  • 3.Complete ICE or IStructE accredited structural engineering modules

How to Prove

  • ·IStructE or ICE membership with structural analysis experience evidenced
  • ·Structural calculation packages checked and signed off by a chartered engineer
  • ·Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration with a specialism in structural analysis
