Cataloguing violations identifies problems but does not resolve them. Heuristic evaluation also requires severity ratings that reflect the likely frequency and impact on users, understanding which violations are symptomatic of deeper design problems rather than isolated errors, and distinguishing between issues that affect all users and those affecting specific populations. A list of violations without this analysis provides limited design guidance.
Research & Outlook
Heuristic evaluation is being augmented by AI-powered automated usability scanning tools that can identify certain categories of heuristic violations — missing error messages, inconsistent button labels, low colour contrast, missing form field labels — at scale across large interface inventories without manual evaluation effort. - 3.Compare your heuristic evaluation findings against actual user testing results for the same interface — the correlation (and gaps) between what evaluators identify and what users actually struggle with is an important calibration exercise that reveals the limits of expert review.
