Ground conditions can vary significantly over short distances — applying data from adjacent sites without verification is a common cause of geotechnical failure.

Borehole data describes conditions at sampled locations, not everywhere between them. Interpolating ground conditions between investigation points requires engineering judgement about geological processes, variability, and the consequences of being wrong. The interpretive risk is concentrated precisely where the ground deviates from what the investigation predicted.

Ground conditions are unique to every site and remain highly uncertain. Geotechnical engineering requires contextual judgement that cannot be fully automated.
