"Preventive maintenance schedules are mainly time-based — service equipment at the manufacturer's recommended intervals, and it will perform reliably."

Truth

Time-based schedules apply average failure assumptions to equipment operating in conditions that may differ significantly from those averages. Condition-based maintenance — monitoring actual equipment state through vibration analysis, oil sampling, thermal imaging, and performance trending — identifies developing failures regardless of the calendar. Time-based maintenance misses failures that develop faster than the schedule and performs unnecessary work where conditions are more benign.

Research & Outlook

Equipment maintenance is being transformed by predictive maintenance technologies — vibration analysis, thermography, acoustic emission monitoring, and machine learning applied to sensor data — that can predict failure before it occurs and optimise maintenance intervals. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is enabling remote condition monitoring at scale, reducing the need for manual inspection routines.   • 3.Practise fault-finding on training rigs or simulators before working on live equipment — develop the diagnostic discipline of eliminating possible causes systematically rather than replacing parts at random.
  • 4.Study the P-F curve concept (potential failure to functional failure) and apply it to a maintenance planning scenario — understanding when to intervene is as important as knowing how.

  • ·City & Guilds Level 3 Engineering Maintenance, IMechE accredited qualification, or equivalent vocational certification in a relevant maintenance discipline
