Skill Profile
Health & Safety
"Identifying hazards in a workplace or task, assessing the risk they pose, and putting practical controls in place to prevent injury or ill health."
YOUR SKILLS
Problems This Skill Solves
- Workplace accidents or near-misses caused by unassessed or uncontrolled hazards
- Non-compliance with statutory duties (e.g. Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974) exposing an employer to prosecution
- Staff exposed to hazardous substances, noise or manual handling risks without adequate controls
- No clear emergency procedure when an incident does happen
Health and safety is just bureaucratic box-ticking.
Properly applied, it's a practical process of preventing real, foreseeable harm—the paperwork exists to evidence that thinking was actually done.
It's only relevant to construction or industrial workplaces.
Every workplace, including offices and schools, has a legal duty to assess and manage risk.
Research & Outlook
Wearable sensors and IoT monitoring are starting to provide real-time hazard data (e.g. noise, gas exposure, fatigue), shifting health and safety practice from periodic inspection towards continuous risk monitoring.
