Skill Profile
Case Management
"The observable action of coordinating services, monitoring progress, and advocating for individuals across a caseload in order to ensure that each person receives appropriate, timely, and joined-up support."
YOUR SKILLS
Problems This Skill Solves
- Individuals falling through the gaps between multiple services because no single person is coordinating their overall journey
- Cases drifting without resolution because actions are not tracked, deadlines are not set, and accountability is unclear
- Inconsistent treatment of similar cases leading to legal challenges or complaints
- High caseloads overwhelming practitioners who lack structured triage and prioritisation systems

"Case management is mainly about coordination — getting the right information to the right people at the right time."
Coordination is the mechanism, not the purpose. Case management exists to ensure that complex situations — where needs, risks, and resources are difficult to align — receive consistent professional attention over time and that the gap between what someone needs and what they receive is actively managed. The admin and coordination are in service of that outcome, not ends in themselves.
Research & Outlook
Case management software is increasingly incorporating AI-assisted triage, predictive risk scoring, and automated workflow triggers that reduce administrative burden. This will allow case managers to focus more time on complex decision-making and direct engagement. However, the human skills of relationship-building, ethical reasoning, and professional judgement will remain irreplaceable at the heart of effective case management.

How to Practise
- 1.Take on responsibility for end-to-end management of a case (legal, HR, or social) — set up a file, document every action and decision, and manage it to resolution
- 2.Study the case management process in your sector (e.g. Local Authority children's services, personal injury law, or HR disciplinary) — map each stage and understand decision points and legal obligations
- 3.Practise caseload triage — given 20 cases with different urgency levels and complexity, define a prioritisation framework and apply it
- 4.Complete a case management training programme relevant to your sector (e.g. BASW for social work, CILEx for legal, CMSA for healthcare)
How to Prove
- ·Evidence of managing a defined caseload to resolution within agreed timescales
- ·Audit or inspection reports confirming case file quality and compliance
- ·Quantified outcomes — e.g. case resolution rates, average time to resolution, reduction in escalations
- ·Professional registration or certification in your sector (Social Work England, SRA, NMC, CMSA)
