Wwise
The most powerful and widely used audio middleware for AAA game production.
What it is
About Wwise
Wwise (developed by Audiokinetic) is the audio middleware of choice for AAA game studios. It handles the full pipeline from sound design to in-game implementation — adaptive music systems, environmental audio, voice-over management, and bus mixing — all within a dedicated authoring tool that integrates with Unreal, Unity, and custom engines. More complex and expensive than FMOD but more powerful for large-scale productions.
What you can do with it
Capabilities
Build adaptive music systems where stems layer and unlayer dynamically in response to game events (combat, exploration, tension)
Implement spatial audio — placing sounds in 3D space with accurate distance attenuation, occlusion, and reverb based on game geometry
Manage thousands of audio assets in a structured project hierarchy with buses, effects chains, and randomisation layers
Trigger, adjust, and debug in-game audio in real time using the Wwise Profiler while the game is running
Integrate voice-over dialogue with automatic ducking and priority management so important lines are never masked
How to learn it
Learning Resources
Audiokinetic's free Wwise 101 and 201 certification courses at audiokinetic.com — the industry-standard qualification pathway
YouTube: Game Audio Learning and Alexander Zhukov cover practical Wwise integration with Unreal and Unity
Build a small Unreal or Unity prototype with at least a footstep system, ambient audio, and one music state machine before applying for roles
Pro Tip
Wwise certifications (101 and 201) are genuinely valued by studios. Completing both and showing a small integration project on your portfolio distinguishes you from applicants who only know DAW work.
