About Telematics Platforms
Telematics platforms — including Teletrac Navman, TomTom Telematics (Webfleet), Microlise, Quartix, and Verizon Connect — combine GPS vehicle tracking with onboard diagnostics (OBD) data to give fleet managers real-time visibility of vehicle locations, driver behaviour, fuel consumption, and maintenance indicators. A telematics unit fitted to each vehicle transmits speed, acceleration, braking, idling time, and GPS coordinates to the cloud platform, which presents the data as dashboards, alerts, and reports. For transport managers and fleet managers, telematics data enables proactive compliance management — the system flags speeding events, Hours of Service violations (for HGV drivers under the EU/UK tachograph regulations), and vehicles operating outside a defined area. Driver behaviour scoring allows managers to identify high-risk drivers for coaching before an incident occurs. Telematics data is also used in insurance premium negotiation, accident investigation, and fuel economy improvement programmes.
