Risk registers

The single source of truth for what could go wrong and who's watching it

What it is

About Risk registers

A risk register records each identified risk alongside its likelihood, impact, owner, mitigation plan and current status, giving project managers, contract administrators and compliance teams a live view of exposure. They range from simple Excel or Google Sheets templates to dedicated governance, risk and compliance (GRC) platforms with workflow, scoring matrices and reporting dashboards. Maintaining one well is less about the tool and more about disciplined, regular review — a register nobody updates is worse than none at all.

What you can do with it

Capabilities

1

Log and categorise risks by likelihood and impact

2

Assign risk owners and mitigation actions with due dates

3

Track risk status changes over the life of a project or contract

4

Produce heat-map reports for stakeholders and boards

5

Support audits and compliance reviews with a documented risk trail

How to learn it

Learning Resources

Review APM (Association for Project Management) risk management guides

Complete PRINCE2 or PMI-RMP risk management training modules

Use free risk register templates from PMI, APM or Smartsheet as a starting structure

Build and review a register for a real or mock project on a weekly cadence

Pro Tip

A risk register only earns its keep if it's reviewed on a fixed cadence — build the review meeting into the project plan, not just the spreadsheet.
