Final Cut Pro

Apple's professional video editor — fast, Apple Silicon-optimised, and a one-time purchase.

What it is

About Final Cut Pro

Final Cut Pro is Apple's professional non-linear video editor for macOS. It uses a magnetic timeline — a trackless editing model where clips snap together and automatically rearrange around insertions, eliminating accidental gaps and sync problems common in traditional track-based editors. Heavily optimised for Apple Silicon, it handles 4K, 8K, and ProRes RAW footage with substantially better performance than cross-platform editors on the same hardware. Widely used in independent film, documentary, and YouTube production where macOS is the primary platform.

What you can do with it

Capabilities

1

Assemble and trim a sequence using the magnetic timeline, which automatically closes gaps when clips are removed

2

Edit multicam footage by switching between camera angles in real time during playback on the angle viewer

3

Apply colour correction using the Colour Board and comparison viewer to match shots across a sequence

4

Export directly to YouTube, Vimeo, or Apple Devices using built-in optimised presets without a separate encoder

5

Separate dialogue, music, and effects as Roles for structured audio delivery to a sound mixer or broadcast master

Pro Tip

The magnetic timeline is disorienting if you come from track-based editors. Spend your first hours specifically practising insertions, connects, and gap management — once the magnetic logic clicks, editing becomes meaningfully faster than the traditional approach.
