CATT-Acoustic

A rigorous ray-tracing engine for predicting how a space will really sound

What it is

About CATT-Acoustic

CATT-Acoustic models sound propagation within a 3D room geometry using detailed ray-tracing algorithms, producing predictions of reverberation time, clarity, and speech intelligibility. It's used by acoustic consultants alongside or as an alternative to ODEON, and is respected for its detailed, algorithmically transparent approach to room acoustic prediction.

What you can do with it

Capabilities

1

Build 3D acoustic models of rooms and performance spaces

2

Predict reverberation time, clarity (C50/C80) and STI

3

Auralise predicted room acoustics

4

Compare design options against acoustic targets

5

Export data to support compliance reporting

How to learn it

Learning Resources

CATT's official manual and tutorial documentation

Institute of Acoustics training and conference workshops

Academic acoustics courses that use CATT-Acoustic in coursework

Practise modelling a known, measured room and comparing results

Pro Tip

Cross-check your model against real measured RT60 data from a similar known space whenever possible — pure simulation without a reality check can drift a surprising amount.
