Time-sensitive pathways exist for STEMI, stroke, and major trauma, but stabilising a patient before transport prevents in-transit deterioration that can undo the benefit of speed.
"Pre-hospital stabilisation is mainly about preventing deterioration during transport — keep the patient stable until hospital care is available."
Stabilisation during transport is necessary but not the full scope. Pre-hospital practitioners make active clinical decisions about airway management, fluid resuscitation, analgesia, and whether the patient's condition warrants immediate transport or on-scene intervention. Many of these decisions have time-critical consequences that cannot be deferred to hospital arrival.
