Suboptimal positioning introduces rotation, foreshortening, and obscured anatomy that reduce diagnostic accuracy even when the image appears adequate at first glance.
"Correct patient positioning is mainly about achieving the target anatomy — once the position produces the right image or access, it is correct."
Target anatomy is one requirement. Positioning must also maintain physiological stability, avoid nerve and pressure injuries during prolonged procedures, allow monitoring access, and remain achievable and sustainable for the patient. A position that achieves ideal access but compromises circulation or creates injury risk during a two-hour procedure is not correct positioning.
