Pattern recognition accounts for typical presentations. Atypical presentations, rare conditions, and images where the finding is subtle or obscured by normal anatomy require active reasoning about what is expected versus what is seen — and the awareness to recognise when the image does not match the clinical picture. Pattern recognition without clinical reasoning misses the cases that matter most.
