TOGAF is a framework, not a mandate — it can be applied lightly or comprehensively depending on organisational scale and context. The criticism of EA as slow and rigid typically reflects poor implementation, not an inherent flaw in the approach. In large organisations with complex, interdependent technology estates, the absence of architecture governance reliably produces expensive integration failures and fragmented data. Agile delivery and enterprise architecture are complementary: architecture sets the guardrails within which teams can move fast without creating systemic problems.
Research & Outlook
Enterprise architecture is becoming more critical as organisations manage increasingly complex hybrid cloud estates, undertake AI adoption at scale, and face regulatory requirements around data residency and security architecture. The role of the EA is shifting from documentation-focused to more strategic and advisory — less about producing architecture artefacts and more about governing decisions and enabling fast, safe change. TOGAF itself continues to evolve (the TOGAF Standard is now updated more iteratively), and EA frameworks are increasingly being integrated with product and platform operating models.
