"Emergency care is reactive — you respond to what you find. You can't really plan for it."

Truth

Emergency preparedness — having equipment checked and ready, having practised the algorithms until they are automatic, having agreed team roles before an emergency occurs — is what determines whether the first critical minutes of an emergency are effective. Emergency teams that have practised together in simulation make faster, more accurate decisions under pressure than those who only respond to real emergencies. The ABCDE framework is systematic precisely because it prevents the natural tendency to focus on the most dramatic finding (e.g., a wound) at the expense of the most immediately life-threatening one (e.g., a compromised airway).

Research & Outlook

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is becoming a standard emergency assessment tool — enabling rapid diagnosis of pneumothorax, pericardial effusion, and haemorrhage at the bedside without waiting for radiology. AI-assisted triage tools are being piloted in emergency departments to improve triage accuracy and reduce waiting times. Simulation-based emergency training is expanding in availability, with VR platforms beginning to provide accessible emergency scenario practice.

How to Practise

  • 2.Participate in simulation-based emergency training — high-fidelity mannequin simulations provide the opportunity to practise emergency scenarios including cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis, and respiratory failure in a safe environment.
  • 3.Shadow emergency department or ICU staff — observing real emergency responses builds pattern recognition for the clinical presentations and team dynamics of emergency and critical care.
