Anaesthetic depth is one variable. Airway management, haemodynamic response to surgical stimulation, fluid balance, temperature regulation, positioning complications, drug interactions, and emergence management all require active clinical decision-making throughout the procedure. The anaesthetic machine monitors and delivers — the anaesthetist interprets, anticipates, and responds.

Performs pre-operative assessment, assists with induction, and monitors an anaesthetised patient under direct supervision. Understands the drugs, monitoring, and equipment used.
Independently manages ASA I–II patients for elective surgery. Performs spinal and epidural anaesthesia. Handles common intraoperative events (hypotension, bronchospasm) without prompting.
Manages high-risk patients (cardiac, obstetric, paediatric, trauma), performs complex regional techniques, leads anaesthetic emergencies, and supervises trainees across a full theatre list.

- 1.Complete anaesthetics foundation training with supervised operating list exposure — log every case with technique, drug doses, and outcome
- 2.Attend a regional anaesthesia workshop with ultrasound-guided nerve block simulation
- 3.Study and practise the AAGBI (Association of Anaesthetists) guidelines for pre-operative assessment and difficult airway management
- 4.Run anaesthetic emergency scenarios (local anaesthetic systemic toxicity, malignant hyperthermia, anaphylaxis) in a simulation centre
