The double diamond provides a useful framing, but the value comes from the quality of the work within each phase. Empathy research that is shallow produces insights that reflect assumptions rather than user reality. Prototyping and testing done without real users confirms the team's existing thinking. Design thinking without rigorous execution at each stage produces outputs no different from those produced without any framework.

Understands the five-stage design thinking framework (Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test) and can apply it with guidance. Conducts basic user interviews, contributes to affinity mapping and "how might we" framing, and participates in brainstorming and paper prototyping exercises.
Independently leads design thinking processes for defined project scopes — plans and conducts user research, synthesises findings into insight statements and personas, facilitates ideation workshops, creates testable prototypes, and runs structured usability tests. Adapts the process to the available time and resources.
Embeds design thinking as an organisational capability — designs and leads multi-week innovation sprints, coaches cross-functional teams in human-centred methods, translates ambiguous strategic challenges into actionable design briefs, and measures the business impact of design-led initiatives. Advises senior stakeholders on when and how to apply design thinking versus other problem-solving approaches.
How to Practise
- 1.Run a full design thinking sprint on a real problem: interview at least five people about a challenge they face, synthesise insights into a problem statement, generate 20+ ideas, prototype the most promising three, and test them with real users.
- 2.Practise reframing problem statements — take a "how might we" question and deliberately reframe it at different levels of abstraction to see how the solution space changes.
- 3.Join a hackathon or design sprint workshop where you must move from problem to prototype in a constrained time window.
- 4.Read and apply "The Design of Everyday Things" (Norman) or IDEO's design thinking resources to a project or challenge at work.
