"BIM adoption is mainly about the software platform — once the team is working in Revit or ArchiCAD, the project is a BIM project."
The software platform enables BIM but does not constitute it. BIM requires agreed standards for how models are structured, what information is attached to each element, how models from different disciplines are coordinated, and how the model is used at each project stage and handed over for operations. Teams using the same software without these agreements produce uncoordinated 3D drawings, not a Building Information Model.
Research & Outlook
BIM is becoming mandatory on public sector projects across many countries, and digital twin technology is extending BIM into the operational phase of buildings. AI-assisted design tools are beginning to generate and optimise BIM models automatically, which will raise the floor for entry-level BIM competency and shift expert value towards information strategy and governance.

Authors discipline-specific models (architectural, structural, or MEP) to agreed LOD standards. Federates models from multiple disciplines and runs clash detection. Produces and manages a BIM Execution Plan for a project.
Sets BIM strategy at organisational or programme level. Defines information requirements (EIR/OIR) for clients and contractors. Manages transition from construction BIM to operational digital twins. Leads implementation of ISO 19650 information management frameworks.
How to Practise
- 1.Build a complete Revit model of a simple building (house or small office) including architectural, structural, and MEP elements from scratch
- 2.Run a clash detection exercise in Navisworks between structural and MEP models — log, categorise, and resolve each clash
- 3.Complete an ISO 19650 BIM management course to understand information management requirements at each project stage
- 4.Contribute to a live BIM project as a model author — follow the project's BIM Execution Plan (BEP)
